About this Product

This mobius infinity shawl pays homage to the colors and patterns seen in the Monarch butterfly - black outlining and highlighting the various shades of orange, yellow, brown and the little pops of white. At the same time this shawl wraps you in your own personal cocoon of warmth.

Measuring approximately 20-inches wide and just under 70-inches in circumference. There are no raw edges, the ends are connected in a flat felled seam (similar to the inseam of jeans) after giving the length a half twist to create a Möbius strip. My mannequin is a size Medium and I am a size Large and it fits both of us quite well.

Ships within two business days from date of purchase. Purchases made on Saturday or Sunday will ship on Monday or Tuesday. Please check USPS recommended deadlines during holiday periods.

Lyon Handwovens - handwoven textiles using sustainable and rescued yarns and vintage and repurposed fabrics

Meet the Maker

Lyon Handwovens is a fusion of my early love of all things textile, a two decade career in environmental consulting, followed by another decade in quality. This fusion has resulted in narrowing my focus in weaving to using sustainable yarns (wool, cotton, silk) up-cycled materials (VHS tape, commercial carpet yarn, plastic shopping bags) and repurposed fabrics (dead stock and remnants from professional decorators, estate sales, thrift shops). Sustainability, like most things is not static and this journey I'm on will require ongoing adjustments, new paths and learning from others. I hope you'll check in periodically to see how my journey is progressing.

How it’s Made

I used at least nine different yarns, some left over from previous projects, some collected from thrift shops and some I bought simply because I liked them and had no specific project in mind at the time. The oddest inclusion of yarn is an orange tape yarn that I picked up at a local thrift store that supports transitioning houseless families - it was wound in a ball at least the size of a softball, but the yarn itself is only 1/8-inch wide. This woven tape makes up the major part of this shawl in both the warp and weft. I'm sharing this part because years ago I wove a scarf using tape yarns and swore I would never again make that mistake - the scarf is beautiful but the time involved was exhausting. But the passage of time, a different size yarn (smaller width), a different loom and a pull I didn't understand at the store and well, here we are.

My woven items are laundered prior to being listed for sale for a couple of reasons 1) to remove the lint that is generated as part of weaving process, along with any oils added at the mill it was spun at and the oils in my hands, 2) wet finishing (or laundering) uses warmer water and agitation than I recommend for the customer to use. Wet finishing allows yarns to bloom and settle into their place in the overall fabric. Additionally because so many different yarns were used I needed to make sure that the shrinkage was similar, not identical but similar. Because so many different yarns were used you will notice on close inspection that the edges are not, like nature, perfectly uniform.

What a lovely "Unlined felted crochet boho bag". It is so pretty, and durable! I have a thing for bags, and I love the multi-color/multi-textures of the various yarns. The "felting" turned it into a super sturdy and luscious bag. And it's one-of-a-kind! Really really love this. I wish I could post a photo. ♥♥♥
