About this Product

This oversized scrappy wool mug rug is a continuation of my summer of exploring new and old weaving techniques. Additionally, using loom waste from previous projects, these little plaid beauties allow me to adhere to my commitment of using mainly sustainable yarns by using these scraps to reduce my contribution to landfills. In the process, I hope to inspire others to think twice about what they throw away.

I have saved the loom waste from my wool and cotton projects for years, but didn't have an idea of how I would use them. This new line of larger than normal rug mugs are handwoven plaid squares that have been felted, the fringe trimmed short and glued to six inch squares of 3/8-inch thick cork backings.

Spot clean with a damp cloth as needed. I have been using mine non-stop and have found it easily accommodates a mug of coffee and large glass of water. It also allows me to have a glass of water and the scissors and seam ripper I'm using to remove the hems from rescued bedsheets that will be used for future table runners and rugs. TV remotes, cell phones, crochet hooks, knitting needles and small snack bowls are just some of the many objects that could share space with your favorite beverage.

Lyon Handwovens - handwoven textiles using sustainable and rescued yarns and vintage and repurposed fabrics

Meet the Maker

Lyon Handwovens is a fusion of my early love of all things textile, a two decade career in environmental consulting, followed by another decade in quality. This fusion has resulted in narrowing my focus in weaving to using sustainable yarns (wool, cotton, silk) up-cycled materials (VHS tape, commercial carpet yarn, plastic shopping bags) and repurposed fabrics (dead stock and remnants from professional decorators, estate sales, thrift shops). Sustainability, like most things is not static and this journey I'm on will require ongoing adjustments, new paths and learning from others. I hope you'll check in periodically to see how my journey is progressing.

How it’s Made

Each mug rug was woven on a small sampler loom as a 9-inch square and then felted by wet finishing in hot soapy water. Using quality wool is the secret to these pieces consistently shrinking from nine inches to six inch squares.

What a lovely "Unlined felted crochet boho bag". It is so pretty, and durable! I have a thing for bags, and I love the multi-color/multi-textures of the various yarns. The "felting" turned it into a super sturdy and luscious bag. And it's one-of-a-kind! Really really love this. I wish I could post a photo. ♥♥♥
